Day 5 – Porcupine Hills Bicycle Trip – South Edge of Provincial Forest to Swan Plain

Of course, the one night it rains you wake up to discover you set up in a hollow. My feet were soaked! It quit raining by the time we got up. Packed up everything wet. On the road at 7:30 a.m.

It was moderately cool and cloudy, perfect weather for cycling. From Grid Road #980 we turned west onto Grid Road #753. Gained 91 m on one long hill climb with the wind at our backs.

My rear derailleur cable broke on the descent, so I adjusted it to 4th gear, effectively making my 18-speed a 3-speed using only the front derailleur. Fortunately it was the last day of our trip!

Stopped at a farm to fill up water bottles. Turned north on Highway 8 toward Swan Plain. I checked out the same photo angle below on Google Maps for an interesting comparison. The barn roof is gone and trees much larger.

We reached Swan Plain at 11:30 a.m., about 40 km from our previous campsite and 310 km total for the trip. We took a leisurely pace, which is my preference, allowing for side trips and the occasional mid-day nap or swim. We were also occasional (not in great shape) riders on low-cost steel frame bikes with a bit more weight than some of the newer bikes.

Journey complete, back at Swan Plain!

Loaded the bikes in the van and stopped at McDonald’s in Yorkton for lunch. Dropped off Al in Yorkton and Gregg in Regina. Back home at the folks place in Regina at 3:30 p.m. Unloaded gear to dry out.

My first overnight bicycle touring trip was a success!

P.S. It is a lot more fun to experience than read about. Honest!
